It’s the classic tale of the stuck-up, indifferent guy and the always-right, saavy girl going head-to-head in a contest to match up their nice guy friend (and roommate) with the perfect girl. When Britton Sergeant and Jacqueline Childs make a bet on who their mutual friend, Christian, will end up dating, they both end up with egg on their faces (and a little love in their hearts!)
Meet Your Match is author Stephanie Fowers sophomore novel, and in my opinion, is just as wordy and obnoxious (if not more) than her first novel, Rules of Engagement. If you thought my tag line for this review was confusing, you’ll be just as confused when reading this book.
The story takes place in a BYU student ward. The cast of characters include 26-year-old Jacqueline Childs, a BYU graduate and struggling love columnist, “Bitter Boy” Britton Sergeant, “Mr. Nice Guy” Christian, the beautiful Charity, and a host of roommates and ward members. The object of Jacqueline and Britton’s game is to see who Charity will fall for - “Mr. Nice Guy” Christian, or “Mr. Jerk” Britton.
It takes over 300 pages for the whole story line to reveal, and I will freely admit that there were several times in the course of those 300 pages where I wanted to quit reading. My huge beefs with the book are: (1) Unless you have attended or are attending BYU, you will have absolutely no clue what Fowers is talking about, (2) her writing is extremely wordy and trendy - she uses very strange terms that I never once heard in my BYU wards (”Bitter Boys Club” and “Squirrelly Girl” to name a couple), and (3) her stories follow classic patterns, and I knew halfway into the book what the outcome was going to be.
I think if you’re attending BYU, single, and proud of it, you will enjoy Meet Your Match. For everyone else - don’t even bother.
You can find Meet Your Match at DeseretBook.com or at LDS bookstores around the country.
